Exchanging Large Files with Us by FTP

Word files not ready for conversion to pdf and powerpoint files can get very large and difficult to e-mail (the typical attachment size limit is 10MB).  Here’s a simple and secure path to upload or download a file to/from our website host’s server, thus bypassing clumsier transfer methods.

If you are already familiar with FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and have this capability, we will supply you with the following information (with x’s and z’s replaced with real text) as soon as you need it.

Host:                       proposalexponent.com

Username:            xxxxxx@proposalexponent.com

Password:             zzzzzz

If you are not already set up with FTP, you should be able to get the job done by simply downloading FileZilla FTP Client (several versions available – I use the recommended Windows version).  Install the software to your hard disk.  Start the program (normally from your desktop), and a fairly plain looking window will open with your computer drives and files showing on the left side (the “local site”) and an empty “remote site” on the right.  Once you enter the correct host, username, and password across the top (which we will supply - don't worry about the port field), you should see your own empty file storage area on the right.

On the left side, navigate to your appropriate folder.  Simply click the file you wish to share with us, and drag and drop it in the empty white window on the remote (right hand) side.  If you moved the wrong file by accident, just right click the transferred file, delete it, and move the correct file.  That’s it!

If we have files ready for your inspection, the process is the same – just drag and drop from our side to yours.  If necessary, we will place our files in a separate folder with an obvious name to prevent any confusion.  You can create folders, too, if the number of files starts getting large and confusing - just right click in the right hand side white space and create a new directory.

For a more thorough treatment on publishing files to a web server, see Christopher Heng’s excellent tutorial "How to Upload a File to your Website using the FileZilla FTP Client".  By the way, TheSiteWizard.com is a wonderful resource that can teach you many things about open source software, website construction, and more.
